Creed's not bad...don't care how overplayed they are.

And as far as song go, I'm more picky about HOW they're played than WHAT is being played. Some kid (or worse, an adult who should know better) cranking away metal riffs very badly on an overdriven Crate full stack is just a headache looking for an audience. It doesn't even matter what's played - I have more respect for someone doing cover tunes well than someone playing anything badly.

I dont mind the nirvana so much as it is always kids who cant play anything else, but for the love of all that is mighty if I have to listen to another 50 year old man with a mullet playing stairway I think I might snap

Anything played badly, if played loudly. If they want to play quietly, it's OK.

I also agree with GrubbyRiffMitt's comment about people who play for acknowledgment. I've seen more than a few in my local GC and I just love to stare them down.

People that play too loudly anger me.
I can't hear myself! Especially "super-strummers" who just bang out chords at like 100dB, and I can't listen to the tone of the guitar I'm playing. Usually, I just wait for them to stop, and if they don't, I end up leaving.
No point in trying to listen to the harmonics or overtones or note separation if all you here are G and D chords blasting into your ears. :/

I don't care what you play, just make sure other people can hear themselves play as well!

(okay fine... i guess i care a little bit... stairway does get annoying after the 10000th time....)

Bach: Tocata and Fugue in Dm.

It just sounds wrong on anything other than a cathedral organ.

Hi PPG...
I guess I think no song should be off-limits to play in a store.

There might be some players I'd like to limit to lower volumes or send into time-out if they become obnoxious.

One day I heard the classic intro licks to "Sweet Home Alabama" played PERFECTLY. There are many who try but, only a few that actually play it correctly. As the potential customer continued I was very impressed. Just had to go upstairs and take a peak. COULDN'T BELIEVE IT ! IT WAS ED KING ! THE GUY WHO WROTE THE SONG. Long story short...he bought the custom strat I built that he was trying out. He did bring it back in a few weeks later and had me exchange the neck for a 1953 Tele neck he had. It has become his main ax and he actually used it when he and Skynyrd were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. He's still using it today and has named her Ol' Red.
Moral to the story...next time you hear "Sweet Home Alabama" in a music store...go check out who's playing it.

Being as you're from Hendersonville (or at least worked there) do you know what guitar Johnny Cash generally used? Is it the same one in the Hurt video?

I'm a total novice, but I am looking forward to learning acoustic and playing classic country and folk, and Cash is my idol, even before he became "cool" again. I can't tell by looking at guitars what kind or model they are, other than electric/acoustic.

I keep seeing Creed come up.

I've never heard Creed played at my workplace before. I guess Canadians avoid it like a disease.

The only thing that bugs me is the guy playing the [insert expensive guitar name] in the middle of the acoustic room for 2 hours.

wrt to the songs played and the talent (or lack of), we're all learning how to play so it doesn't matter to me. Do you ever wonder what the older guys in the store thought of you when you were a pure beginner? I doubt if Andrés Segovia would be critical of what I am trying to do on the expensive classicals when the Room Hog finally leaves

Anything that has "boom-chuck" as it's predominant rythym pattern, or inspires visions of bare feet, bib overalls, and trucker hats.

I was not a big JC fan so, someone else could probably better answer your question. He only came in the store once to buy a couple of guitars for his grandchildren for christmas. His brother Tommy was pretty much a regular though.

There's some information about his guitars at http://www.acousticguitar.com/issues.../gear102.shtml which you might have already seen but I don't see anything about Hurt, unfortunately. I suspect it's his signature Martin:
