Our local shop has signs up on the wall stating the banned song list....

I can't remember all of them, but I know the following are on the list:

80's hair band music
Smoke on the Water
Sweet Home Alabama
Smells like teen Spirit

there are several more.... And they will ask you to stop or leave if you start playing one of them

Wait, you guys forgot one. "Over The Hills and Far Away" by Zep. Especially by someone who hasn't quite mastered pull-offs yet.

i've actually never heard anything that annoys me in a guitar shop as for songs...i figure, if that is what they want to play to hear the guitars mojo, so be it...

I knwo when i play in a guitar store, I play the EXACT same thing every time....why?...because that is how I can compare tone from one guitar to the next....as i know how that progression sounds and can then tell the difference from guit to guit......

I play a few different riffs, then two songs that I almost always play are hotel california, and stairway to heaven intros....(lol even though that is on most peoples hate list according to this thread )

+1.

I guess I don't really care what anybody plays. Sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't.

Default Sometimes not the what but the why...

For me, it's not what is being played, but why. GC of course comes to mind when I mention this...there are those who patronize a store to purchase or to research a new instrument or gear, and then there are those who are looking for some random validation from a stranger.

You know the ones - you hear the sound of a guitar playing at a volume just a tad bit above the rest of the din. It may be good playing or it may be bad playing...then, as you seek out the source of the "alpha riff", your eyes are met by those of the player, who is desperately scanning the store for anybody who will acknowledge him or her. You make eye contact....DOH!!! You look away immediately, silently kicking yourself for becoming an inadvertent audience member in their pretend concert.

I'm a guitar teacher, and when I give students Stairway I warn them to never ever play it in a guitar store. (hey, they are paying me for good advice). I guess I better start warning them about Sweet Home Alabama too!

Classical Gas????? If someone is good enough to pull off a decent acoustic version of that at GC then more props to them, that's a tough song to play, i'll sit and listen.

I haven't been in a GC in a while even though I have a $100 gift card that my girlfriends family gave me last christmas so I havent had to deal with 3 chord hell.

Funny and TRUE story. In 1996 I was custom building guitars in a shop in Hendersonville, TN. I did the construction in the basement. We had a small amp room upstairs just over my workbench where customers could go to try guitars. I could hear them most everytime if I didn't have a machine running. One day I heard the classic intro licks to "Sweet Home Alabama" played PERFECTLY. There are many who try but, only a few that actually play it correctly. As the potential customer continued I was very impressed. Just had to go upstairs and take a peak. COULDN'T BELIEVE IT ! IT WAS ED KING ! THE GUY WHO WROTE THE SONG. Long story short...he bought the custom strat I built that he was trying out. He did bring it back in a few weeks later and had me exchange the neck for a 1953 Tele neck he had. It has become his main ax and he actually used it when he and Skynyrd were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. He's still using it today and has named her Ol' Red.
Moral to the story...next time you hear "Sweet Home Alabama" in a music store...go check out who's playing it.
