I did quite alot of searching for information about Cocobolo and discovered that the desirable stuff is located in Guatemala. That country is cites restricted for Cocobolo. The trouble is that Cocobolo has traditionally come from a a centralized distribution location with the best examples of timber being offered having origination in Guatemala (but not identified this way). Typically none of it was tagged as to where it came from because until April of 2010 when new provisions of the Lacy act went into effect, you only had to identify the origination by species and Cocobolo comes from North America, Mexico, and Central America. Well guess what there is only one named species for Cocobolo "Dalbergia Retusa", but in reality there are possibly as many as 20 or more actual varieties of Dalbergia Retusa, each with different genetic makeup, oil content, etc.
Some of this information might need slight improvement in detail, but this was my best shot at describing what I discovered when reading about the wood.

This could be a problem for them because the Cocobolo that comes from Guatemala has an oil makeup that is far less allergic and much less abundant. My speculation is that this makes for a wood that is more dense, and is easier to glue, and should be far more resistant to cracking. If you remember early on Taylor had lots of trouble with cracking Cocobolo, then the problem vanished. I believe the problem vanished when they found wood of a better quality for guitar building, but unfortunately that wood comes from Guatemala.

No. Taylor is very sensitive to the whole legal wood (legally harvested) issue. It would be tough for them to go so strong at being legal, being very green and members of all these conservation groups and then turn around and do something really questionable.
